There’s no better time to be a Fan of the Southern Jaguars than right now.

Southern has 18 sports on campus, including the recently revived Men’s and Women’s golf teams and Men’s tennis. Other sports are baseball, Men’s and Women’s basketball, cross country, football, Men’s and Women’s track and field, Women’s bowling, softball, Women’s soccer, Women’s tennis, Women’s volleyball, and a co-ed cheerleading team.

“We have a lot to be excited about. It’s safe to say Southern University Athletics is in a great spot right now,” said Athletic Director Roman Banks. “We are maximizing our potential.”

Banks noted that sports like football, basketball and baseball always draw large crowds, but he’d love to see additional Fan support for Olympic sports, including ones such as volleyball and soccer.

No matter which event members of Jag Nation attend, Banks said the attendance and associated ticket revenue is crucial to Southern staying competitive in today’s college sports landscape, which includes name, image and likeness deals and Student-Athletes playing at multiple schools via transfer portals.

“I think more than any time ever, you need your alumni and fans to support you. Paying for that ticket makes a difference right now,” Banks said. He added that within the next few years, Southern’s NIL partners would likely need to collect $30,000 to $50,000 to attract a top-flight football quarterback. Other student-athletes may garner smaller NIL deals, but the dollars add up.

“Everybody knows that is a budget issue. You have to be creative,” Banks said. “We will challenge ourselves to continue to put a good product on the field, on the court, and most definitely in the classroom.”

Southern University has a proud Athletic tradition as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
