Ascension Parish residents are rallying to provide relief for people impacted by recent hurricanes.

Supplies are being collected from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday in the parking lot behind Chili's in Tanger Outlet Gonzales.

In partnership with Volunteer Ascension and Rotary International, Tanger has set up a collection point and encourages the Ascension Parish community to drop off essential items for donation.

Critical items that are needed for disaster relief include:

  • 5-Gallon Buckets
  • Mops
  • Push Brooms
  • Paper Towels
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Garbage Bags
  • Floor Scrapers
  • Utility Knives
  • Wheelbarrows
  • Work Gloves
  • Plastic Bins
  • Shockwave
  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Formula

Tanger centers across the country are also supporting the American Red Cross in its disaster relief efforts. Customers are encouraged to make a donation at https://www.redcross.org/donate/cm/tanger-pub.html/.

"Your contributions enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to, and help people recover from disasters across the U.S. $10 provides a comfort kit and snack to three people, $50 funds a full day of food and shelter for one person, and $135 covers cleanup kits for five families," a news release said.

Volunteer Ascension Executive Director Sherry Denig has been working with Rotary District 6200 Disaster Relief Committee leaders to organize local efforts.

Rotary District Governor, Craig Walling, who also serves on the Rotary Disaster Relief Committee and as a member of the Gonzales Rotary Club, said the district's emergency respond group from Lake Charles will join Volunteer Ascension on Monday to collect and deliver supplies to victims in the Tampa area of Florida.

The group's emergency team has been busy in recent months providing supplies and assistance to hurricane victims across the south, Walling said.

"We know what it's like when a disaster hits and we've always received help, so we want to help other when we can," Walling said Friday.
