Opelousas Police Chief Graig LeBlanc and a former police officer who allegedly shot the chief's wife after she confronted the two about an extramarital affair were indicted Wednesday.
A third person, an Opelousas Police officer, also was indicted, according to Lester Duhé, press secretary for Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. The Louisiana Department of Justice is prosecuting the case.
The charges stem from a Dec. 22 argument in which the police chief's wife, Crystal LeBlanc, a captain with the St. Landry Parish sheriff's office, confronted her husband at Savannah Butler's St. Landry Parish home about an alleged affair with Butler, who was an Opelousas Police officer at the time.
Both Graig and Crystal LeBlanc were allegedly shot by Butler who police said was captured on video after the incident washing blood from the floor and walls of her home.
Butler was indicted on charges of:
- Attempted manslaughter of the chief's wife.
- Aggravated battery against the chief.
- Aggravated assault with a firearm against the chief's wife.
- Obstruction of justice.
- Malfeasance in office.
LeBlanc was indicted on charges of obstruction of justice and malfeasance in office, as was Tyrone Abrams, a police officer, Duhé said.
The indictments were handed down in Opelousas at the St. Landry Parish Courthouse.
The three were previously arrested by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, LeBlanc on felony charges of obstruction of justice, malfeasance in office and failure to seek assistance.
Abrams' charges stem from a video showing him arriving at Butler's home after the shooting and not intervening when Butler allegedly cleaned blood from the crime scene.
Butler was placed on paid administrative leave Jan. 9 pending an investigation. She resigned in February.
