One person was found dead in a vehicle submerged in a pond on Sunday, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Around 4:40 a.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies were notified of a vehicle submerged in a pond at the corner of Bluebonnet Boulevard and Harveston Way, the release says. St. George firefighters went into the pond and recovered the body of Alex Gonzales-Hernandez, 40, who was driving the vehicle.

Investigators determined Gonzales-Hernandez was traveling north on Bluebonnet Boulevard when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed through a wooden fence on the right of the road. The vehicle then traveled through a tree, causing the tree to snap in two, before landing in the pond.

The vehicle was completely submerged when law enforcement arrived. It is unclear how fast Gonzales-Hernandez was traveling before the crash.

An autopsy will determine cause of death. Additional information was not immediately available.
