A Lafayette roofing company is being accused of fraud after one of its inspectors was alleged to have intentionally damaged the roof of Livingston Parish homeowners.
The Louisiana Department of Insurance accused Zechariah "Zack" Moore of Youngsville and the Lafayette company Roofing Guys, LLC of violating insurance laws, according to an LDI cease and desist order.
In August, two Livingston Parish homeowners were asked by their neighbor if a roofing company could inspect their roof on a referral.
Sometimes after, Moore is alleged to have called the couple requesting to inspect their roof.
The couple assumed the call was from the roofing company referred by their neighbor, and so agreed to the inspection.
Moore, a representative of Roofing Guys, met with the couple at their home to inspect their roof for damages from recent weather events. After Moore's inspection, he returned with pictures of damages that would cost $30,000 to $40,000 to repair.
The cease and desist order claims Moore created the damage himself.
Moore would later text the couple photos of the roof along with messages officials say "intentionally misrepresented the cause of damage" and "engaged in the practice of public adjusting without a license."
The couple would discover that Moore was not the inspector the neighbor recommended. They contacted the real inspector the day after Moore's inspection.
That inspector would confirm that the damage to their roof was manmade, according to the order. The following day, the homeowner filed a police report against Moore with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office.
On Sept. 26, Moore was arrested by the sheriff's office and charged with felony damage to property with intent to defraud.
Moore and Roofing Guys have 30 days from the day of notice to request an appeal.
