Lutcher head coach Dwain Jenkins watches the action in the first half of St. James High's football game vs Lutcher High Friday in Vacherie. Lutcher led 28-0 at halftime.

Lutcher running back Trenton Chaney wanted the ball in the key moments during Friday’s District 8-4A showdown against E.D. White Catholic.

The Bulldogs fed him the ball early and often, and the senior star rewarded them with a three-touchdown night in a 27-20 win over the Cardinals in Lutcher.

The win helped Lutcher remain perfect this season with a 6-0 record and 4-0 mark in district play. E.D. White fell to 5-2, 3-1.

How it was won

Lutcher led 14-10 at halftime in a physical showdown between two of top teams in Class 4A play this season.

After E.D. White cut the score to 20-13 in the fourth quarter, Lutcher faced first-and-10 from its own 7-yard line with 7:10 left.

It took one play for Chaney to sprint 93 yards for a touchdown that gave the Bulldogs a commanding 27-13 lead.

“I knew I was gone,” said Chaney, a UL commitment. “They weren’t going to catch me because 100%, I trust in myself. I worked my butt off this offseason. When the ball is in the air, I’m going to go get it. If I have to run a 100-yard touchdown, I’m going to run it. If I get the chance, I’m going to score.”

Player of the game

Trenton Chaney, Lutcher: He finished with touchdown runs of 93 and 1 yards. He also caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zach Jenkins, which put Lutcher ahead 14-7 with 9:37 left in the second quarter.

They said it

Lutcher coach Dwain Jenkins: “I think (this win) shows the growth of our football team. We saw some adversity tonight. E.D. White is a great program. For awhile, they’ve been really good. Our guys responded. I don’t think we executed well in the first half. Defensively, we just rose to the challenge in the second half. We’ve been in some games where we’ve blown people out. We’ve had some huge leads in the first quarter. We were able to coast through it but tonight E.D. White punched us right back. Our guys got up off the mat. When we had to have it, we made the plays we had to have to get the win.”

E.D. White coach Kyle Lasseigne: “That’s a really good football team that we played. That’s probably the best football team that we’ve played this season. They are really balanced and good on offense. They are well coached. They have some real big guys up front on defense. It made for a tough battle. Battles like this you can’t make small mistakes. Small mistakes cost us, so hopefully we’ll get better from here and put ourselves in a good position for the playoffs and make a run.”
